How do I upload/download files to and from the KIDS Homepage via FTP?

Please read the information on this page carefully. There are differences in browsers and platforms, so make sure you find the information which applies to your situation. The top of the page gives information for getting into the site. At the bottom is more specific information for after you get in.

TSR FTPers, please read the FTP information, then go to the bottom of this page for specifics on accessing your directories.

For Netscape 2.0 and newer:

To download a file via FTP, type into the location bar in your browser (for example):

YOU WILL NEED TO USE YOUR UNIQUE USERNAME PROVIDED BY KIDS WHERE YOU SEE "jdoe" IN THE ABOVE EXAMPLE. This process will prompt you for a password, also provided by KIDS. You will need to select "Save As" from the File menu, and save the documents onto your hard drive to make changes.

To upload a file onto the KIDS' site, type in the same as above.

The browser will prompt the user for a password. If the username and password is valid, the list of district directories will be displayed. Click on the appropriate directory. (ISBE FTPers: Click on the ISBETSR folder, then on your district folder.) Go to "File" and select "Upload" to move files onto the KIDS' server.

For Non-Netscape Users:

If you are not using Netscape as your browser, you will need to download some free FTP software. Below are links to sites where you can download Fetch for Macs, and WS_FTP_LE for Windows.

MAC Users:

You can download FTP software free from any of the following sites:

Columbia University

Dartmouth University
Click on "Fetch 3.0.3" in the second paragraph.

Here's a quick online tutorial on Fetch.

Or here's a quick down-and-dirty tutorial of my own. After you INSTALL this FTP program (it should put it in a "Fetch 3.0.3 Folder" on your hard drive), double click on the little puppy dog icon that says "Fetch 3.0.3" in the "Fetch 3.0.3 Folder". This should open a window called "New Connection". Fill it out as follows:

Host: kidsroe.org

UserID: (Use ID supplied by KIDS)

Password: (Use password supplied by KIDS)

Directory: Delete anything that is in this box. It should be blank.

Hit "OK"

You should see a window labelled "kidsroe.org" with a list of folders in it. Find the "ISBETSR" folder, double click on it, find your district folder, double click on it, and you should see a file. When you double click on the file, it will ask you where you want to put it on your hard drive. Select an appropriate location, and hit "Save".

To upload files from your hard drive to our server, select "Put File" from the window labelled "kidsroe.org", find the file on your hard drive, click "Open", leave format as "Raw Data" and click "OK."

PC Users:

You can download FTP software free from the following sites:

http://www.ipswitch.com/downloads/ws_ftp_LE.html While this FTP software is available other places, this particular version is the only one that's free to non-profit agencies.

FTP Help Page

After you INSTALL this FTP program (take note of where you put it on your hard drive!), double click on the FTP WS_FTP95.exe icon. You should see a "Session Properties" window. Fill it out as follows:
Profile Name: KIDS

Host Name/Address: kidsroe.org

Host Type: Automatic detect

UserID: (Use ID supplied by KIDS)

Password: (Use password supplied by KIDS)

Check the box "Save Password"

Hit "OK"

You should see a split window with "Local System" on the left and "Remote System" on the right. Under "Remote System" you should see a list of folders. Find the "ISBETSR" folder, click on it, find your appropriate district folder, click on it, and you should see a file.
To move that file to your hard drive, enter an appropriate path name in the field under "Local Drive" on the left. Then double click on the file in the right-hand window and it will copy over to your hard drive, showing up in the left-hand window. To move the completed files back to our server, do the above process in reverse.

School Webpage Managers (TSR FTPers see next section): Once you've FTP'd into our server, it will take you to a "Schools" level folder. Find your appropriate district folder, click on it, and it should allow you access to your district files.

TSR FTPers:

Once you've FTP'd into our site, click on the ISBETSR folder. Find the folder labeled with your district number and click on it to access your files. You will need to select "Save As" from the File menu, and save the documents onto your hard drive.
